Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 1 • 2026–27
Answer-first chapter overview
Names, letters and classroom objects become tools for counting and comparing. The main mathematical habit is to count each item exactly once and organise information clearly.
Learning goals
Students practise counting with one-to-one correspondence, comparing quantities, number names to 99, classification and simple tallying. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.
Worked example
If four names have 3, 5, 4 and 5 letters, the longest length is 5 and two names share it.
Hands-on activity
Write the names of five family members. Count the letters in each name and make a tally table.
Practice questions
- Count 28 objects by grouping them in tens and ones.
- Which is greater: 47 or 39? Explain using tens.
- Make a tally for red, blue and green objects in your room.
How should a student use this page?
Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
Is this a substitute for the NCERT book?
