Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 10 • 2026–27
Answer-first chapter overview
Informal units can give different answers for different people, so agreed measures are useful. This chapter works with practical length comparison and metre-based measures—not centimetres.
Learning goals
Students practise comparing and estimating length, hand spans and footsteps, and metre, half-metre and quarter-metre. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.
Worked example
A ribbon two half-metres long measures one metre. Four quarter-metres also make one metre.
Hands-on activity
Estimate whether five classroom objects are shorter or longer than one metre, then check with a metre strip.
Practice questions
- Why can two people get different hand-span counts?
- How many half-metres make one metre?
- Name an object about a quarter-metre long.
How should a student use this page?
Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
Is this a substitute for the NCERT book?
No. This is an independently written learning companion for revision and practice. The official textbook remains the prescribed source.
