Class 2 Maths Chapter 3: Fun with Numbers — NCERT Joyful Mathematics Guide

Answer first: “Fun with Numbers” develops numbers to 100, number order, skip counting and patterns through familiar situations, observation and hands-on reasoning.

Learning goals

  • Represent the main idea using objects, drawings or symbols.
  • Explain a strategy in simple words.
  • Check whether an answer is reasonable.
  • Apply the idea in a new everyday situation.

Try this activity

Use a 1–100 chart. Cover a number, identify one before and after, then count forward/backward by ones and skip-count by twos, fives or tens.

Let the learner choose a method and explain it. Ask “Can you show another way?” before introducing a faster strategy.

Worked example

On a number chart, 56 comes after 55 and before 57. Counting by tens from 26 gives 26, 36, 46.

Change one number or object and solve again. Comparing the two results helps the learner notice what changed and what stayed the same.

Practice with answers

  1. What comes just before 70?
    Answer: 69
  2. What comes after 48?
    Answer: 49
  3. Continue 5, 10, 15, __.
    Answer: 20
  4. Which is greater: 63 or 36?
    Answer: 63

Common mistake and correction

A common mistake is changing both digits when only moving one step. Use a concrete model, identify the exact step where the idea changed, and let the learner repair the answer.

Parent and teacher note

Keep sessions short and conversational. Value estimation, drawings and multiple strategies. Use only safe household objects, avoid collecting personal data in surveys, and use pretend money rather than real payment information.
