Class 2 Maths Chapter 8: Grouping and Sharing — NCERT Joyful Mathematics Guide

Answer first: “Grouping and Sharing” develops equal groups, repeated addition, multiplication arrays and early division through familiar situations, observation and hands-on reasoning.

Learning goals

  • Represent the main idea using objects, drawings or symbols.
  • Explain a strategy in simple words.
  • Check whether an answer is reasonable.
  • Apply the idea in a new everyday situation.

Try this activity

Make equal groups with counters. Create 3 groups of 4, write repeated addition, then share 12 counters equally among 3 plates.

Let the learner choose a method and explain it. Ask “Can you show another way?” before introducing a faster strategy.

Worked example

3 groups of 4 make 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Sharing 12 equally into 3 groups gives 4 in each.

Change one number or object and solve again. Comparing the two results helps the learner notice what changed and what stayed the same.

Practice with answers

  1. What is 5 + 5 + 5?
    Answer: 15
  2. How many objects in 4 groups of 2?
    Answer: 8
  3. Share 10 equally between 2 children. How many each?
    Answer: 5
  4. Is 3, 3, 2 an equal grouping?
    Answer: No

Common mistake and correction

A common mistake is using multiplication when group sizes are unequal. Use a concrete model, identify the exact step where the idea changed, and let the learner repair the answer.

Parent and teacher note

Keep sessions short and conversational. Value estimation, drawings and multiple strategies. Use only safe household objects, avoid collecting personal data in surveys, and use pretend money rather than real payment information.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a full NCERT solution page?

No. It is an original concept, activity and practice guide. It does not claim exercise-by-exercise solutions.

What is the main idea in “Grouping and Sharing”?

The central learning focus is equal groups, repeated addition, multiplication arrays and early division.

How should mistakes be handled?

Return to objects, drawings or a number model, ask the learner to explain one step, and encourage a correction without pressure.
