Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 2 • 2026–27
Answer-first chapter overview
Everyday toys can be described through three-dimensional shapes. Observe whether a surface is flat or curved and whether an object can roll, slide or stack.
Learning goals
Students practise cube, cuboid, cone, cylinder and sphere; faces, edges, corners, curved surfaces and spatial language. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.
Worked example
A ball is like a sphere: it has a curved surface and rolls easily. A dice is like a cube: it has flat faces and can stack.
Hands-on activity
Sort six safe household objects by shape and record whether each rolls, slides or stacks.
Practice questions
- Name an object shaped like a cylinder.
- How is a cube different from a sphere?
- Which shape would you choose for a toy wheel, and why?
How should a student use this page?
Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
Is this a substitute for the NCERT book?
