Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 5 • 2026–27
Answer-first chapter overview
Complex designs can be built from simple two-dimensional shapes. Folding, cutting and opening paper help us predict symmetry and how flat pieces form larger patterns.
Learning goals
Students practise 2D shapes, straight and curved lines, composing designs, nets, folding, cutting and patterns. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.
Worked example
Two equal squares placed side by side form a rectangle. Several flat faces can also fold to make a box.
Hands-on activity
Create a picture using only triangles, squares, rectangles and circles. Count each shape used.
Practice questions
- Which shapes have only straight sides?
- How can two triangles make a larger shape?
- Continue a repeating shape pattern of your own.
How should a student use this page?
Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
Is this a substitute for the NCERT book?
No. This is an independently written learning companion for revision and practice. The official textbook remains the prescribed source.
