Class 3 Maths Chapter 8: Fair Share — NCERT Maths Mela Notes, Solutions and Practice

Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 8 • 2026–27

Answer-first chapter overview

A fair share means equal parts. A half is one of two equal parts, while a quarter is one of four equal parts; unequal pieces are not halves or quarters.

Learning goals

Students practise equal sharing, wholes, halves and quarters of shapes and collections. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.

Worked example

Half of 12 counters is 6. A quarter of 12 counters is 3 because 12 is split into four equal groups.

Hands-on activity

Fold two paper circles into halves and quarters. Check that the parts overlap exactly.

Practice questions

  1. Find half of 18.
  2. Find one quarter of 20.
  3. Explain why two unequal pieces are not halves.
How should a student use this page?

Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
