Class 6 English Poorvi: Unit 1 — Fables and Folk Tales Study Guide

This original NCERT-aligned guide helps students study all three texts in Unit 1 — Fables and Folk Tales of Poorvi. It adds reading, vocabulary, grammar, speaking, writing and exam practice without reproducing the textbook passages.

Texts in this unit

  • A Bottle of Dew
  • The Raven and the Fox
  • Rama to the Rescue

Quick answer: what should I learn?

Use cause-and-effect to follow the fable or folk-tale plot, then distinguish what each character wants, the choice made and the consequence. Compare the explicit ending with the lesson a reader can infer.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify main idea, character, sequence, setting, speaker and genre.
  • Use context clues before checking a dictionary.
  • Explain how dialogue, imagery, rhythm or factual organisation shapes meaning.
  • Speak and write in complete, well-sequenced sentences.

Three-text reading method

  1. Preview each title and predict its subject.
  2. Read once for meaning; mark who, where, what changes and why.
  3. Record five useful words with contextual meanings and original sentences.
  4. Choose one short reference from each text and explain what it shows.
  5. Compare the texts by theme, form and language rather than retelling them.

Language workshop

Build a notebook with nouns, pronouns, describing words, action verbs, adverbs, connectors and one sentence pattern noticed in the unit. Transform two sentences by changing tense or speaker, then read them aloud to check meaning and agreement.

Writing and speaking

  • Write a 100-word summary of one text with a clear beginning, middle and end.
  • Write a comparison paragraph using both, however, while and therefore.
  • Give a one-minute talk connecting the unit to a responsible personal observation.
  • Ask and answer two open questions with a partner.

Practice ladder

Recall

Name the speaker or central character, setting and one major event in each text.

Understand

Explain a title and one important image or action in your own words.

Apply

Use one new word correctly and write advice a character could use.

Analyse

Compare how two texts communicate a related idea using different forms.

Answer-writing frame

Answer the question directly, give a brief reference, explain what it shows, and link back to the unit idea. Check names, tense, punctuation and word limit.

Self-check

  1. Can I summarise every text without copying?
  2. Can I explain five words in context?
  3. Can I identify one craft feature in each text?
  4. Can I compare two texts in one organised paragraph?
  5. Can I revise and improve my first draft?
