Class 6 Kaushal Bodh Project 6: Cooking without Fire – Vocational Learning Guide

Class 6 • Vocational Education • Kaushal Bodh • Work in Human Services

Project overview

Cooking without Fire helps learners plan a nutritious no-flame food item while learning hygiene, measurement, teamwork and service. This original project companion converts the official NCERT brief into a clear plan–do–observe–improve workflow without reproducing textbook content.

Essential question

How can a team produce a useful, responsible outcome, explain its choices with evidence and improve after feedback?

Learning goals

  • Define the need, user or purpose before starting.
  • Plan materials, roles, time and safety checks.
  • Record observations and decisions honestly.
  • Test a small version before expanding.
  • Reflect on teamwork, sustainability and improvement.

Safety and ethics boundary

Before work begins: adult supervision, clean hands and surfaces, safe cutting tools, allergy checks, fresh ingredients and prompt refrigeration. A teacher or responsible adult decides whether a tool, ingredient, location or activity is appropriate. Stop when conditions are unsafe. No learner should be pressured to disclose private information or perform a task beyond ability.

Step 1 — Understand

Write a one-sentence problem statement: “We want to ___ for ___ because ___.” Identify who benefits, what constraints exist and what success will look like. Ask at least two factual questions before choosing a solution.

Step 2 — Plan

Create a table with task, responsible team member, materials, time, safety check and evidence to collect. Prefer reused, local and low-waste materials when hygienic and suitable. Obtain permission before using school spaces, devices, personal stories or owned objects.

Starter activity

With adult supervision, design a simple recipe card listing ingredients, quantity, steps, allergens and storage time.

Show the draft to a peer or teacher. Record one useful suggestion, decide whether to accept it and explain why.

Step 3 — Make or investigate

Work in short stages. Photograph only with permission, or use drawings and written records. Label measurements and dates. If a result differs from the plan, record the change instead of hiding it. A failed trial can still provide valid evidence.

Step 4 — Test

  • Does the outcome meet its stated purpose?
  • Can another learner understand or use it safely?
  • Is the information accurate and properly credited?
  • What material, time or waste could be reduced?
  • What accessibility improvement is possible?

Evidence portfolio

Keep the problem statement, first plan, risk check, observation notes, labelled draft, feedback, revision and final reflection. Use genuine evidence; never invent survey results, measurements, photographs or user comments.

Competency questions

  1. What need does the project address?
  2. Which constraint most changed your plan?
  3. Name one risk and the action used to reduce it.
  4. What evidence shows that the result works?
  5. What would you change in a second version?

Assessment guide

A strong submission shows planning, safe process, accurate records, purposeful making, respectful teamwork and evidence-based reflection. Decoration alone is not proof of learning. Teachers should assess process as well as the final output and provide accessible alternatives.

Common mistakes

  • Starting production before defining the purpose.
  • Copying an online idea without credit or local testing.
  • Assigning all skilled work to one team member.
  • Ignoring consent, privacy, allergies, tool or environmental risks.
  • Reporting a perfect result instead of documenting revision.

FAQs

Must every group make the same product?

No. Outcomes may differ if they satisfy the official project goal and agreed safety rules.

Can AI or online material be used?

Only with teacher permission, verification, source credit and no personal-data sharing. Learners must understand and explain their own work.

What if materials are unavailable?

Use a model, drawing, role-play, dataset or teacher-approved local alternative while preserving the same learning goal.
