Class 3 Mathematics • Maths Mela • Chapter 11 • 2026–27
Answer-first chapter overview
Capacity tells how much a container can hold; weight tells how heavy something is. This chapter uses litre and kilogram families plus comparison with a pan balance—not millilitres or grams.
Learning goals
Students practise capacity and weight, comparison, estimation, litre, half-litre, quarter-litre, kilogram and balance reasoning. The emphasis is on explaining a method, checking an answer and using mathematics in familiar situations.
Worked example
Two half-litre containers fill one litre. Four quarter-kilogram portions together make one kilogram.
Hands-on activity
Compare three empty containers by predicting which holds most, then test safely with equal cupfuls of water.
Practice questions
- How many quarter-litres make one litre?
- Which side of a pan balance goes down?
- How many half-kilograms make two kilograms?
How should a student use this page?
Try the activity first, solve all three questions without copying, then explain one answer aloud. Use drawings, counters or a number line whenever they make the reasoning clearer.
Is this a substitute for the NCERT book?
